Most people within architecture, design, or the building/construction trades will tell you that the secret to getting projects done on time and within budget is to know a good fabricator. They have the ability to turn ideas into reality with their construction of materials, bespoke one-off items, or necessary components. As such they can make or break projects. With this in mind, just what should you be looking for when seeking a quality metal fabricator? Here are 5 factors.
Their capabilities
If you have some pretty grand ideas ask yourself if this particular metal fabricator can live up to them. If it’s a large structure you’re after such as a decorative metal staircase or an entire mezzanine floor do they have the space in which to create it? What about materials? What do they specialise in? Remember it’s not uncommon for some fabricators to work with a selected number of materials only. Do they handle the design aspect too? It’s one thing to take a prototype and turn it into a finished component, but to design something from scratch from a drawing and turn it into a reality is something else. And finally can they turn projects around quickly? Often deadlines are tight or are ever moving so you may need a fabricator who can meet those demands without compromising the rest of their business.
Their experience
Fabrication is a trade where experience matters. It’s a highly skilled job and many of the projects within it need attention to detail and precision engineering. Therefore you might want to ask yourself “Is this particular company experienced enough to avoid making any costly mistakes which may have a knock-on effect on my business?” Ask them about similar projects they’ve carried out and also don’t be afraid to ask for references.
What about customer service
Many companies forge long-term relationships with metal fabricators because they have great customer service. They recognise the value that your business brings and are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that you the customer are happy with the final results. If you don’t get that same feeling from the metal fabricator that you’re in discussion with, then don’t hire them, It’s as simple as that.
Don’t compare apples to apples
When considering price don’t let cheap be the deciding factor. Some fabricators for example may use higher quality metals or higher precision tooling and that could be reflected in the pricing. However this may suit your project better than a cheaper company who carry out bulk work. Some smaller companies also offer more customised, specialised services and therefore have to charge slightly more. However again, if this suits your purpose, then don’t rule them out in favour of cheaper options.
Location
If you’re looking for a long term business relationship then you might prefer someone local. Sometimes it is better to communicate your ideas face to face rather than by email. A company that deals with local customers can often keep costs down and therefore pass that saving onto their customers.
