Installing a stainless steel staircase in your office or home is not only a great way to add a touch of contemporary design and individuality to a room or space, but it’s also incredibly durable meaning that it should last for many years to come.
When steel stairs are used on the outside of buildings linking one floor to another, they’re normally galvanised. As a result the protective zinc coating acts as a barrier from rust and protects them from the elements over time. For interiors staircases, they too need protection and in most cases they’re either galvanised and/or powder coated. This comes in a wide array of colour finishes but not only does it provide a splash of warming colour that metal sometimes needs, it also adds protection to the joints where the stair rises and treads are welded to the framework.
As you can already see, if manufactured properly, stainless steel staircases are built to last and therefore don’t need much doing to them in the way of protection like adding varnish or stain to wooden stairs might. That said, it still pays to keep them in tip-top condition and you can do this by keeping them clean. With this in mind, just how should you clean a stainless steel staircase?
Outside staircases
With an outside staircase cleaning is a very simple operation. Use a power wash to remove any built up dirt and debris accumulated in and around the joint and weld areas. However a word of warning – if your outside staircase is treated with a layer of powder coating make sure that you don’t use an industrial style machine otherwise it may strip the powder coating right off the metal. Even a household machine that uses a concentrated setting is powerful enough to remove powder coating so do be careful. If you’re unsure, a good old bucket of hot soapy water and a sponge will do the trick just as well, then simply rinse down with a normal hose.
Inside stainless steel staircases
For inside staircases it’s always best to use a soft brush to first of all remove all the dirt, dust, and debris. Then with a sponge and a bucket of water, containing a mild household cleaning detergent, simply wipe off excess debris. Finally rinse off any soapy residue with clean fresh water.
Depending on use a steel staircase should be cleaned regularly. You don’t have to do much in the way of maintenance but by keeping your staircase dirt, dust, and debris free, it’s sure to look contemporary and stylish for many years to come.
