Steel is without doubt the most important industrial material in the world today. In fact it’s everywhere you look. Even if a product isn’t made from steel there’s a strong chance that the machinery used to produce it was. Yet we’re only really just scratching the surface and the reality is that the potential for this man made composite is far from being exhausted. With this in mind, here’s a glimpse into the potential of steel.
Construction
Steel’s role in the construction industry can be spectacular, yet in modern day buildings it’s also essential. One of the great things about steel is that it has a combination of factors that make it perfect for building. It’s relatively quick and inexpensive to produce. It also a material that provides both robustness and durability, yet can also be lightweight and flexible. For this reason many modern day architects have embraced an abundance of steel in their buildings. Just think, without steel we wouldn’t have many of the iconic buildings that we do today such as the Eiffel Tower, the Shard, the Burj Al Khalifa or the striking Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing. Going forwards experiments are being carried out on steel using OPV (Organic Photovoltaics). The aim is to print OPV cells onto steel sheeting in a continuous process. This way large surfaces of buildings fashioned from OPV steel will be able to deliver it’s own source of energy.
Automotive
In the automotive industry multiphase steels are now being used that make vehicles lighter and fuel efficient. However going even further developers are now trying to combine multiphase steel with other lightweight components such as carbon and titanium to make an even lighter vehicle that surpasses the safety and durability levels of other far heavier vehicles.
Household goods
The hygienic properties of steel are well-known and this is why it’s universally used in appliances such as fridges, freezers and dishwashers as well as household items such as cutlery. Now manufacturers are looking into easier ways to colour coat steel in order to bring down the cost to retailers and of courser the end consumer.
As you can see, the versatility of steel knows no bounds, yet it seems that when it comes to uses we’ve only just touched the tip of the iceberg. Because of it’s versatility, cost-effectiveness and it’s ability to be recycled time and time again, it truly is a wonder material that’s at the cutting edge of modern day life.
